PROPOSAL

The Coalition brings its background from the enquiry into the selection process of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan in 2015 with renewed focus on the Students’ Unionism in South-West Nigeria.

We are determined to run two phases within the first quarter of 2018 which are to conduct research into the cause of suspension/expulsion of students including the suspension of students’ union and flagging off process to restore the suspended Students’ Unions specifically that of University of Ibadan, Oyo State and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The first phase will be strictly research-based which will be independently handled by members of THE COALITION with a view to analyzing and making holistic/virtual report from informed data while the second phase will be in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students/Joint Campus Committee (NANS/JCC) of Oyo and Osun States. There is the need to seek the support of relevant agencies, individuals and stakeholders in the education sector to actualize the goals of restoring the suspended Students’ Unions at the aforementioned institutions.

Being a non-profit organization, there is need to externally source for resources to make our goals a reality which informed our decision to solicit financial and kind supports from people of like minds.

Attached with is a copy of the proposed budget.

Please accept the assurances of our esteemed regards.

Sincerely,

INTRODUCTION

SINCE the birth of the Coalition, a conglomerate of people who undertake issues, and investigate them with the view to proffering solutions, we have undertaken an investigation on the vice-chancellorship process in the University of Ibadan, and submitted petition on same to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria (kindly see attachments). We have also launched a media arm of the Coalition, which is the Conscience Post (kindly see attachment(s)), but at large operates as a blog, with the expectation that with adequate funding it will be on a website that can be accessed worldwide.

We have been greeted and woken to the realization that burning issues would not seize to exist, and that where there is such socio-political frictions and economic tussles among humans, conflicts and crises abound. Without playing messiahs, or creating martyrdom, there is need to address issues, crises, conflicts as they affect humans, bringing in humanitarian, or human right perspectives. Alone this year, over hundred students of the University of Ibadan have been served query letters, who are members of the Students’ Union Representative Council (SRC) and the Executive Council, Students’ Union, University of Ibadan, which always, from experience, lead to students’ disciplinary cases to cripple the voices of students on the need for them to ensure adequate supply of basic amenities like water, electricity, food, shelter, infrastructure vis a vis facilities.

Experience has shown that hidden reasons of ego tussle, financial impropriety among the students and the institutions’ management may make one institution, person or body to sanction the other(s) in order to cover up. When crises arise in the institutions, there require the need to investigate, prevent violation of rights or oppression of the weak or helpless. This is not to conclude that the students do not err at all.

However, the goal of THE COALITION is to investigate, or address humanitarian, leadership and human rights aspects of issues that concern students so that oppression, violation, or victimization by the powers that be/ authorities in the citadel of learning would not persist thereby limiting the leadership orientation and acumen of students and students’ leaders alike.

From the Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, University of Ibadan, to University of Lagos, Nigeria, we have had stories of expulsion, suspension and threats to studentship.

We at THE COALITION have decided not to play the ostrich. Some of the students themselves have spoken to us. We have undertaken to voluntarily help some of the students by referring them to trusted legal practitioners for counseling while we carefully examined their grievances whether genuine or not. While ours is to take a lens to examine the humanitarian or human rights angle to resolving or proffering solutions or succour, we are being guided by the ultimate zeal that due process, fairness, equity, good conscience must be adhered to by the oppressor and the  oppressed, as the case may be.

This time, our project is centered on the victimization of students, students’ unionism and leadership being foundation or platform for future, national or international leadership, the living conditions of students, and studying conditions of students that may lead to their being oppressed, victimized, suspended or expelled from school.
